Easy Walks in Peterborough

Despite spraining my ankle a few weeks ago, the first nice day where I could go outside and have a casual, easy walk with my dog was heaven. I wasn’t the only person with this in mind either, as I ran into several others enjoying the reprieve from winter this year. It seems that spring weather is finally here to stay, which means more chances to just go for a low impact, no fuss walk. Here in Peterborough, we are surrounded by so many different places to get in a walk like that. The crew at the Jack Daniels Inn want to share a few to enjoy.

The Common Pathway near downtown Peterborough.

Starting near downtown Peterborough, you can pick up the Common Pathway at several different spots. This 6.5 mile walking path provides an easy terrain for walking, biking or running and stretches close to Peterborough’s town center all the way to the Hancock town line. The path transitions in some spots from paved to dirt, connecting sidewalks and trails. It’s a great, low impact walk that anyone can enjoy. I recommend parking at the Peterborough Shopping Center where it cuts under 101’s bridge and towards town. Maybe snag a quick lunch at one of the great restaurants to enjoy in the park in Depot Square before continuing down Summer Street where the path hugs parts of the Contoocook River! Dogs are also allowed on this pathway, which makes it a perfect trail to get out with the entire family.

Taking Booth for a walk through Wheeler Trail!

If you’re aiming to do something a bit shorter, check out Wheeler Trail just off of route 101. It’s only .7 miles, making it a perfect quick hike on relatively flat terrain that connects to the Cranberry Meadow Pond trail should you want to do some more serious hiking. Accessible by Evens Street, Evans Flats Trail also provides a casual, low impact walk. Dogs are unfortunately not allowed on this trail, so just keep that in mind if you were looking to take your four legged friend with you. I suggest getting lunch afterwards at Nature’s Green Grocer in West Peterborough! Don’t forget Edward MacDowell Dam and Shieling State Forest, which are highlighted here. If a quick ten minute walk is what you’re truly aiming for, then right on Concord Street from the hotel into downtown Peterborough. You can get lunch, do some shopping and then relax at the Inn. Ask the staff at the Jack Daniels Inn for other suggestions, we all are happy to guide you around Peterborough!
